The Descendants And Midnight In Paris Win WGA Honors

clooneydescendents_200.jpgWoody Allen’s romantic fantasy Midnight In Paris took top prize at the Writers Guild Awards Sunday. The iconic director won for best original screenplay about a modern-day Hollywood writer [Owen Wilson] who gets the opportunity to hang out with his literary idols, Hemingway and Fitzgerald, in Paris.

The George Clooney film The Descendants won for best adapted screenplay for director Alexander Payne’s version of the novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings — an honor he shared with co-writers Nat Faxon and Jim Rash.

This boosts the prospects for each film, of a win at next Sunday’s Academy Awards, where both movies are in the running for best picture.

Charlie Sheen Served Cease & Desist By Warner Bros. For Using Two and a Half Men Photo To Promote New Show

csheenwarnerbros_200.jpgLOS ANGELES, California (X17online) – Lawyers from Warner Bros. have sent a cease and desist letter to the actor for using a Two and a Half Men image to promote his upcoming FX show, Anger Management.

At least two shots were included in a promotional publication distributed by the network and production company Debmar-Mercury in January at the NATPE conference in January when Sheen and his team were pitching their show for domestic and international buyers, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“That you are using Warner’s intellectual property for a commercial purpose – namely, to sell another show – is especially egregious,” studio lawyer Katherine Chilton wrote in the letter, a copy of which was obtained by The Hollywood Reporter. “Please immediately cease and desist from using these photographs or any other intellectual property belonging to Warner.”

Statutory damages for copyright infringement are $150,000 per infraction and actual damages can be much higher.

FX, Debmar-Mercury and Sheen attorney Martin Singer declined to comment to THR.

NBC Under Fire For M.I.A.’s Super Bowl Halftime Appearance

miamiddlefinger200.jpgLOS ANGELES, California (X17online) – NBC is receiving flack for its failure to blur M.I.A.’s middle finger during the Super Bowl halftime show.

The rapper “flipped the bird” during her performance with Madonna and Nicki Minaj on Sunday night, prompting groups such as the PTC (Parents Television Council) to criticize NBC, as well as the NFL, for enabling it.

“The NFL hired the talent and produced the halftime show,” NBC said in a statement. “Our system was late to obscure the inappropriate gesture and we apologize to our viewers.”

The controversy is reminiscent to that of Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake’s 2004 Super Bowl halftime show, during which Jackson infamously flashed her nipple as a result of a “wardrobe malfunction.”

Survivor Producer Accused Of Murder To Be Extradited To Mexico

bruceextradition200.jpgLOS ANGELES, California (X17online) – Survivor producer and alleged murderer Bruce Beresford-Redman will be extradited to Mexico on Wednesday, RadarOnline.com reports.

Beresford-Redman is accused of murdering his wife Monica in April 2010 at the Moon Palace resort in Cancun, where the couple had been vacationing with their two children. After being reported as missing, Monica’s body was discovered in a sewer at the resort with signs of asphyxiation.

Beresford-Redman and his legal team unsuccessfully fought extradition to Mexico, and the producer will be forced to turn himself in to Mexican authorities.

“We are disappointed in the court’s decision denying our request to prevent the extradition of our client, Bruce Beresford-Redman,” Beresford Redman’s attorneys said in a statement. “After consultation with him, Bruce has decided not to appeal the decision and to return to Mexico and defend himself on the charges.”

If convicted, Beresford-Redman faces up to 30 years in Mexican prison.

Soul Train Creator Don Cornelius Dies Of Apparent Suicide

soultrainsuicide200.jpgLOS ANGELES, California (X17online) – Soul Train creator Don Cornelius has died of an apparent suicide.

The 75-year-old’s body was found in his Sherman Oaks home Wednesday morning, and he was pronounced dead at Cedars-Sinai Hospital one hour later of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Cornelius first created and hosted Soul Train in 1970 as a local dance show in his hometown of Chicago, and by 1971, it expanded to become a nationally televised show. The show, which came to an end in 2006 after a record-breaking 35 years, was celebrated for its promotion of racial, cultural, and musical diversity in the years following the Civil Rights Movement.

“Don was a visionary pioneer and a giant in our business,” said Quincy Jones, a friend and business partner of the late Cornelius, said in a statement. “Before MTV, there was ‘Soul Train,’ that will be the great legacy of Don Cornelius. His contributions to television, music and our culture as a whole will never be matched.”
